Captain of the airship [skyship] that the story me and ~VonBrrr created is mainly set upon.

I was shooting for an olde English look for this one, a-la Thomas Gainsborough and Sir Joshua Reynolds. I rather liked the effect and process of underpainting everything in burned umber. The globe is there purely because I wanted to paint one of those fantastic old globes. The whole painting basically revolved round my desire to paint one. :B

The steampunk element of our project got a little buried under the historical fantasy element for the most part, as I'm sure you can see here.... :P

Well I've finally found time to write the promised critique. I would say this painting is a milestone in your traditional art skills, cause it really shows how far you've come and how much further you can go from now on, and I truly believe that with more experiments and playing with your style you can come to achieve really mindblowing results. The colours in this are really interesting because at a closer look you haven't used that many, but you managed to apply them in such way that it makes the viewer want to spend more time looking at this painting. I like the round metallic window frame in the background because it's not a common element in scenes such as this one, but yet again it fits perfectly into the scene and it gives the painting a sort of fantastic feeling. It reminds me of a goblin sky ship. You've given the character a lot of personality and I like the attention you paid to the details of his jacket, I'd love to see you paint more complex uniforms in the future. Kudos for the globe too, it's a great addition. Anatomically speaking though I'd say the head is a bit too small, a fact which is aggravated by the big hair too, and I would suggest practising more on portraits using real photos to excercise your facial features. I'm looking forward to seeing more works from this series.

The pose is a little static but the expression is forth coming... There is little something off with the shape of the head and skin tone is a little to close to the foreground tone. The sky outside the window looks like a painting rather than a real sky and finally there is some lack in tonal definition in the background. What works well is the expression and the warm color tones and outfit. Keep pushing ur awesome talent...

Yah, the pose is meant to be a formal pose in the vein of classical portraiture. The skin and vague background are both unfortunately products of limited time and rushing. :P

Thanks for the crit and kind words! :meow:

This guy reminds me of my grandpa if he were from back in those times. His face looks exactly like his!

Ohhh I like it. Steampunky goodness.

Btw, did you know that those fantastic old globes very often doubled as liquor cabinets? One of my friends has one. The upper hemisphere lifts off and reveals your collection of spirits. I think it's absolutely terrific. As is your painting. I just thought I'd share a little useless fact with you :-P

Thanks, I'm glad the steampunk actually shows through. :la:

I saw the drinks cabinet ones when researching them, yes. Although I assume they don't actually spin if they have booze in them.

Oh, they spin, all right - or some of them anyway. Just not very fast :-P They do get kind of heavy.
