After experimenting with cartooning, I wanted to try using my newfound line & wash cartoon style to create a more serious illustration.
This was inspired by reading about areas where so much depleted uranium ammunition has been used that military personnel only venture there in HAZMAT suits. The native children of course don't know about the danger, and play in such dangerous areas in blissful ignorance of the damage being done to them.
Although this was very rushed I think it might be my favourite of the cartoons I did.
Watercolour and fineliner on paper, 42cm x 29.7 / 16.54 x 11.7"
You are definitely beginning to master the watercolour technique. The colours are perfect together and you managed to add some brighter and more colourful spots without them disturbing the rest of the context. I like how the characters blend into the lower part of the background and how some soldiers stand out of the dust, thus integrating the white area of the background into the context too. All the characters have the right attitude and they definitely express your message, you've managed to create an obvious contrast between war and humanity. The only thing I would suggest is cleaning up the work area a bit, you can see some spots on the white background and shadows on the margin of the paper. You are proving yourself to be a great illustrator.
I really enjoy this style, but probably because I've always loved watercolours, it's my favourite medium. The art itself is great, and for some reason I love the way the smoke is somewhat enveloping their feet.
