Devil Owl by CrimsonMagpie Devil Owl by CrimsonMagpie
This was for a brief that called for us to illustrate many different owls in varying states of stylisation, and is the most highly-polished and conventional of the final images I created.

For some reason this was very popular with both my tutors and fellow students, and after being hung in the main stairwell for a fortnight (part of our owl mini-exhibition) now resides in its frame on the classroom wall. :B

Little dude is meant to look all innocent like that, as if it doesn't know how evil it is.

Acrylic on paper, 29.7 x 42cm 11.69 x 16.54

Thanks so much to =tintits, *Ptolemy666 and ^Mollinda for the suggestions and DD, it's so much appreciated! :iconproudplz:

Suggester says: "I just like the whole composition and the colours, or better said colour he used, which he managed to apply in so many different tones that the painting doesn't look boring at all, and I also think he made great use of lighting and used an interesting positioning of light source. I also think he gave the concept of Devil an interesting and subtle approach and the huge horns definitely give the effect of creepiness that he meant to convey."

I think it might have had something to do with the villain in Rockadoodle but that probably could have just reinforced my fear of owls. When I saw an owl for real at the zoo, I wasn't afraid of them anymore. I thought they were cute then. I was really little at the time so I can't remember extactaly why I was afraid of them.

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but is this painting hanging in your classroom permanently, or were you able to take it with you after you graduated? I'm curious because if it isn't hanging in the school, and if you'd be willing to part with it, would you consider selling it?

That aside, this is a lovely painting. The owl itself strikes me rather profoundly. While being wholly unnatural it feels almost human, particularly in the eyes. It's creepy but incredibly fitting. I honestly can't stop staring at it, I think you did an excellent job with this.

It's still hanging in the classroom currently, I think (our classroom is relocating over the summer). But I still own it, so I can always go and re-appropriate it if I wanted to. I've never really thought about selling the original, since I'm more used to the idea of selling rights to an image, but I guess I wouldn't mind parting with it for a fitting sum. You're actually interested in buying it? :O

Thank you, I was trying to inject some level of unnatural intensity into it's expression, and I'm glad I seem to've succeeded. :meow:

I am! I'm very interested in work like this (I'm pretty sure some of my own stuff says about as much), and this would be a painting I would definitely like to hang on my wall once I get out of this dingy apartment.

You're welcome!

what a great design, i like the simple shapes and your brushing :) Great idea with the moon between its "horns" One thing, if you had added simple sillouette shapes of pinewoods in the low Bg i think this could be epic ;) But then again, its great as it is in all its devilish simplicity!

Thanks, I'm something of a fan of simplicity in images. The idea of a forest in the image is a good one, I might paint a new version of this to see how it looks. :meow:

Cool Emoticons in your artist comments, really upbeat '/)...
The coolest aspect of your piece to me is how those could be the horns of a serious being, or simply branches of the tree that it resides. The message of 'The Natural' world is usually pretty clear and gives the options to see it in whatever way one can, but goodness, please see it!:O_o:
