Drugs by CrimsonMagpie Drugs by CrimsonMagpie
Last autumn I was invited to the quarterly independent Brooklyn newspaper Thunk. Check them out here, they have all issues online too [link] :meow:

This is one of the images I painted them, which was used in the December issue. A comment on the often seen hypocrisy of people who decry illegal drugs.

Whilst researching reference for the beer bottles I saw how popular 'lite' beers are in the USA. What is the attraction of such piss-water over real beer? :noes:

this image is so accurate! many people I know think only because alcohol, nicotine, caffeine etc. are not illegal and society accepts or even approves of using them = they are not drugs and not bad for you, or at least not as bad as "real" (the illegal) drugs! but indeed alcohol is the most damaging drug, because of it's high potential to harm people not involved though, the most damaging for the consumer is heroine, at least according to this study: [link]

sorry it's only in german... but I will translate for you: the y - axis describes the potential of damage and on the x - axis the drugs are listet. the pink bar stands for potential of damage this drug can cause for your enviroment (example: some people tend to be aggressive when drunk, addicts can steal from people to sell their stuff and gain money to finance their addiction etc.) and the blue bar shows the potential of damage for your own body and mind.

I drink and smoke myself so I'm not for banning alcohol and tobacco. I do not demonize drugs either, I just think people should know what the stuff they are consuming does to them and should not assume only because something is legal it is not bad for you or somewhat better than the illegal products.

Finally I am also really fond of your style used here :) I like how lightly colored the people are and their overall gross and degenerate look

*I made a mistake: according to the study above crack is the most damaging to the consumer, not heroine. I overlooked that one xD

I don't really differentiate alcohol from other drugs; it's still a drug, but a tasty one. :dummy:

Well done. Plenty of illegal drugs are equally or less harmful than legal ones. The motivation for making a drug illegal isn't purely an issue of health, it's usually about money. Drugs have the potential to do bad things as well as good things.

Great illustration and great message.

Indeed, societal acceptance plays a huge part in it. Personally I've no problems with legal drugs, but it's important to realise just what they are. =p

Cheers! :iconbritishplz:

The thing is people like that don't realize that alcohol and cigarettes (nicotine) ARE harmful, addictive drugs; they're just legal.

Besides, beer and cigarettes are nasty. Beer reeks of rusty piss while cigarettes are burnt ash :puke:

Here's another idea: "Legalize pot, man! It doesn't make you violent or nothin'!"
*is oblivious of the vicious drug war in Mexico*

How about this?
"They should stop the war on drugs. It's so counter-productive."
*snorts another line of coke*

Aaargh, it annoys the hell out me :crash:

Yup, that's the gist of it. =p

Here in the UK some government body (that the government doesn't like much) compiled a list of the most dangerous and damaging drugs in order, and both alcohol and nicotine were up in the top ten, possibly the top five. Heroin was obviously #1, but alcohol was #2, above crack and the like.

I understand that. In the U.S., alcohol is ranked among the top when it comes to harmful substances. Not to mention cigarette use is a leading cause of death, too(aside from heart disease & obesity).

this is exactly like my argument about how politicians decrying shit like extramarital sex and stuff related to LGBT issues while doing that stuff is like a heroin addict saying not to do heroin

Actually, I think most Americans don't like "real" beer. This isn't based on anything scientific, just my own observation. To me it's all piss-water.

I did some research for this cartoon and found that indeed, the most popular beers in the USA are nearly all lites. Me and the girlfriend were looking at some of those 'look how much we drank' images recently, and you see a picture of dozens of cans, think 'lawds, that's quite impressive' and then realise that all the cans are lite beer.

Do they think that there is less alcohol in lite beer or something? That wouldn't matter if someone drank 8 or 9 bottles.

I don't know, I don't drink any types of alcohol.

"lite" beer is actually quite the scam. you make lite beer by adding tons of sugar to a batch, which makes for a very high alcohol content, then add bunches of water to it to bring it back within the legal limit. that way the breweries make bank off it, and all they have to do is convince the idiots that it's healthier because it has fewer calories.

i don't know anyone who drinks lite beer. all my friends are beer snobs, bless'em.

Perhaps they can't handle the real stuff. :la:

Late comment is late, but anyway...

It's pretty cool how you've portrayed the effects of everything through their faces, which appear to be quite troll-ish, really.. what with it all saggy and stuff like that. I thought it was just women who experienced this, but the way you've captured it in men makes it all the more interesting, I think. :D

I like the composition and the way you have coloured it. The colours go together well and there is a subtlety to it that makes it more profound, I think.

Great stuff. :la:

That's what I think, I want to see an American drink some Cornish ale. :icongrinstareplz:

I was trying to be as harsh and scathing as possible when drawing their faces, but I had no idea females feel like that. :paranoid: I realised when painting this that I'm a terrible judge of the kind of colours people actually wear. I'm primarily a fantasy/sci-fi artist, and was surprised at how bad I was at depicting real-life fashion... maybe that's what you see in the colours here? :p

We Brits are the pub masters! :dummy:

Really? :O

It's quite stereotypical, I suppose, but I always thought that quite a lot of older women felt that way. Not only do they feel it, but they actually see it... you know the saying that men age like fine wine or whatever? Yeah, women don't age as well. Of course, there are individual differences, but it's mostly women who get botox and all of that lot. :paranoid:

Possibly! I don't think it's overly bad in any way. :D

I wonder; do other nations even had a word equivalent to 'pub'? :O

People might say a lot of that is rooted in our superficial culture, but logically it's more rooted in animal instinct; hundreds of thousands of years ago, an older man would have proven through his continued existence to be a tough survivor and all that, which is why females tend to find older men more attractive than males find older women, since an older woman won't have the same connotation. :B
