There's more work in this than anything I've ever done.
The more astute among you may recognise layout sketches of this I submitted a long while ago, and my previous submission 'Red Savage' was a preparatory colour test.
It was done as part of a college project last winter, in which we had to produce something for a 'live brief', so I decided to produce an entry for Spectrum: The Best in Contemporary Fantastic art; an annual open-submission artbook. After finishing the landscape I ballsed-up the figures and didn't have time to put my mistake right before the deadline, and so it languished in a folder for over a year until I dug it out and finished it.
I chose the subject matter carefully; much of my previous output had a paucity of narrative, and I wanted to rectify this, partly to add interest and encourage the viewer to invest more emotion in the characters. This subject also allowed me to paint both sci-fi and fantasy characters; the best of both worlds, literally!
Compositionally, I wanted a strong contrast, hence everything takes place in a rough triangle of dark tones amongst almost featureless snow and sky. The landscape was inspired by Siberia, and the space-suit by early cosmonauts. It's meant to look very out of place in that world of muted tones. I'm not great at facial expressions, but I tried to convey a look of curiosity and concern on the girl's face.
