Frontline Thoughts 1 by CrimsonMagpie Frontline Thoughts 1 by CrimsonMagpie
'It's inhumane, man! Now I can only afford to get wasted three times a week!'

First of my 'Frontline Thoughts' series, for a college project last year.

The idea of this series is that it's hypothetical interviews from 2012 with students telling how the rise in tuition fees has affected them. I thought that since political cartoonists will be asked to satarise just about anything, being able to put aside personal bias and poke fun at one's own demographic is an important skill.

Being the cynic that I am, I had a lot of fun taking the piss out of students, especially as they need so little exaggeration.

This guy is based very closely on an ex-housemate. :stare:

Probably my favourite one, makes me laugh out loud every time. I think its good to see students take the piss out of the student protesters - it's annoying that they singlehandedly ruined the reputation of all students in the UK lol.

Thanks dude, it's good to know people find these funny. :manhug: The protesters are indeed annoying, and I think it's fitting to ridicule them, as they did more harm than good really. :P

Brilliant! Your choice of colour for colouring skin reminds me of the cover art of King Crimson's In The Court of the Crimson King :B

Where can I find any of those interviews?

Thanks, for some reason watercolour encouraged me to be a lot bolder with the skin colouring, although this guy is a little grey, but that's probably because of all the weed. :meow:

Oh, these are just imaginary interviews, the kind of things I imagined students would complain about. :P

Damn, I thought they were real interviews :c

Also, how do you start when drawing a portrait of somebody? I usually start with drawing the shoulders.. Just interested. :B

Maybe I didn't make that fact clear enough in the artist's description.... :P

I tend to start by drawing the overall shape of the figure very lightly, kind of like a skeleton for the rest of the drawing to develop around. I can't just start with a particular part and carry on from there; I'm not disciplined enough for that, I need the whole shape of everything down first. :meow:

Indeed, I don't think you met the guy he's base on, but I'm sure most students know someone like this guy here. =p
