This is one of five paintings I did as part of my final major project at college. This part of my project was a theoretical commission from Wizards of the Coast to illustrate a set of basic land cards for Magic: The Gathering, one of each type of land; forests, mountains, swamps, islands, and plains.
I wanted this forest to have that dark look that suggested it's vast size and age. Something majestic, powerful and dangerous, similar to the forest in Princess Mononoke. I like the sort of mood created when strong sunlight shines into an otherwise dark place.
I'm not very happy with this painting, it's both overworked and rushed, which, being something of opposites, didn't make for a good outcome.
