Reject Unit i by CrimsonMagpie Reject Unit i by CrimsonMagpie
At the start of term there was a college trip to the Newlyn art gallery, which was hosting an exhibition of inspirational miscellanea at the time. There was one exhibit that really inspired me; a series of (real) insects encased in little cylinders of clear resin, they had their heads replaced with tiny, stylised human heads made of white clay, and were called Reject Units. I feel terrible for forgetting the artist's name. . . :C

I'd love to make some sort of series based around them, as it found it to be a wonderful and inspirationally evocative visual device.

I tried to make the face androgynous, but I don't know why I made it so mask-like, it just seemed right at the time.

Acrylic on paper, 29.7 x 21cm 11.7 x 8.3"

Unfortunately the original artist is very anti-technology and has no web-presence, so online images of his work don't exist. :c

It needed a backlight to stop it from getting lost in the background. :B

Oustanding work, as with the metalics and the androgynous mask - eerie and surreal as it has to be. Cold, inky tones just complement to it.

aahhhhhhh yes ofc. it reminds me of a nightmare i used to have as a kid (was terrified of wasps for years). but basically they would chase me and chase me untill i jumped in the sea to get away. i would think i was safe and then they would swim through the water after me :(

As said in the comments; simply the Newlyn Art Gallery. Maybe I'll do some further delving before commencing more art on this theme though. . .

This is an incredibly interesting piece, I always love your 'strange' interests, it makes you art so cool to view. I really like the positioning of the arms, and the colours used look very nice in this type of piece. The little bit of purple used on the edges makes him stand out more, while still remaining part of the background, not sure if that makes any sense. :B Either way, it looks very awesome.

Thanks, Rayums. :aww: I tend to be self-conscious that my art is a little bland, so it's nice when it's regarded as interesting, although most of the credit must go to the original artist. =p

I'm glad you like the arms/legs; I positioned them carefully to give a sense of ambiguous dilemma, so it could be horrified at something, full of angst, or just have a headache. :B

You're welcome. Well I find that in general your art is very unique, and I love your bloody stuff the most, recently it was really inspiring for me, and I've felt like making some gory things like I generally would like to. So I'm very glad I watch you. :0

That was the sense of emotion I was getting, and I thought it was very well done.

Seriously though, it's great that you've been creating the kind of artwork you really want to, and I'm glad I inspire you to do it. Gory art can be wonderfully cathartic.

Of course. :0 If I didn't dislike paint so much I'd be doing that, but instead I'm taking my inspiration to digital art. :P
Someday I'll get around to posting some gory pictures, but the sketches just haven't reached the right stages yet.

I don't love paint all the time, it's a love-hate relationship. :paranoid:

Digital is good though, whatever you feel you're best at is best. :B I seem to remember you posting some pretty gory stuff a while back. . .
