Skaven Incursion by CrimsonMagpie Skaven Incursion by CrimsonMagpie
RATS! RATS EVERYWHERE!!! :iconbohobellaplz:

This was intended to be the first in a small series of works for a portfolio tailored to Games Workshop, although it's nowhere near up to standard. I did learn some important lessons whilst doing though. :meow:

I had the to depict a Skaven infiltration into the realm of Naggroth, the home of the dark elves. One usually sees the Skaven fighting their natural foes; humans and lizardmen, so I thought this would be interesting. I tried to create a composition appropriate to rulebook covers and the like.

Information on the Skaven can be found here [link]

Very awesome painting! It portrays the Skaven very well. I especially love how you've done the Maulerblades Rat Ogre. :D

Oh man... I need to get my poor Skaven out and repaint them =(
This is wonderful, I can't believe I haven't done a search for Skaven before on here, or Lizardmen for that matter! Still, this is an awesome rendition of the mottley crew, and well executed for a paint-on-paper work... no wrinkles!

At least you have some Skaven. =p And you reminded me I really should do some lizadmen art, seeing as they were my favourite Warhammer race for a long time. . . D: Thanks, I'm quite well practised at stretching paper now. c:

Urg, slow replies are slow.
Teehee, I have some Lizardmen too ^^; I never did play the game, I just liked painting odd animals, I guess! So expensive ._. Drawing them is much cheaper and looks just as awesome! I'll be checking back to see more Warhammery stuffs :3 Oh, hows about Beastmen? *browses away to look at new models*

I never played much of the game, just painted a lot of figures. . . The cost is indeed prohibitive. :iconsadtardplz: Beastmen? They released some excellent figures for them 5-6 years ago, I'm almost tempted to see if one can still buy them. . .

Not many people have naplam in the Warhammer world. And of the people who do have it, the Skaven are more likely to have it than anyone else. ;)

Hellz yeah they do! :#1:

It was actually intended as a portfolio piece to send to Games Workshop with the intent to get a job with them. . . but in my humble opinion I think it's way too sub-standard. . . :(

If you have the patience for it, do the painting again from scratch. Take everything that you learned from the first time, and see if you can't address your problems in a more successful way the second time around.

I agree that you need to use contrast to create a focus so your audience can more easily read the what's happening. Also, remember that the further back in space objects are, the lower their saturation and contrast will be. Try to make the objects/characters in the foreground slightly warmer than what's behind them to make them advance in space and catch our attention more.

Just some things to think about.. Keep up the hard work ;)

Unfortunately I'm not a patient artist, so I'll unlikely try redoing it. . . Although I will, as usual, hopefully apply what I've learned during this painting to the next I do. . . and all the others after that, I hope. :)

Aha, I forgot about using warmer colours in the foreground. :slow:

Thank-you for the advice and kind words. :glomp:
