New Journal is New

Mon Oct 15, 2012, 3:12 PM
So that old journal was just too old, so let's replace it with something vaguely unsatisfying, like entering a loose person. :meow:

What is your favorite ice cream flavour?
Honeycomb, or hideously artificial bubblegum flavour. :la:

What do you enjoy doing the most?
I don't really know... many enjoyable things are unsatisfying, and vice versa. Sex and drawing are good. :B

If you could read somebody's mind, would you go and do it? Even if you were invading their privacy big time?
Yes, because it would make life a lot easier.

If you could instantly become a star, what would you do? What's your reaction to that?
I'd light up the world, be super hot, and give people cancer. :la:

What do you do to fall asleep? (Count sheep?)
A large mug of coffee and lying in bed usually does the trick. Also spooning. :meow:

What would you change about the world? One thing only. Why is this most significant?
I'd make water violent lime green. If you want a reason, think about what the world would be like with this wonderful change.

What color represents your life this moment?
Black & white. Because I'm cool like that. :toocool:

Did you ever run away when you were little?  If so, why?
Nope. :meow:

:happybounce: I tag everyone who wants to punch my journal header in the face. :happybounce:

Journal Entry: Tue Jan 3, 2012, 6:05 PM

Good evening, my little droogs, I trust you've all recovered from your hangovers enough for me to wish you positive tidings for the new year. Yes, I know the world is going to blow up or something later on, but lets enjoy it whilst it lasts, no? :meow:

1. For each of the 20 first people answering this journal, I will put their avatar and the three deviations I like most from their gallery on the list!

2. If you answer, you have to DO THE SAME in your journal, putting the tagger on the first place. The idea of this is not to get a free feature, it is to spread art around for everyone!

Interesting Scraps & Geometry

Journal Entry: Sat Oct 1, 2011, 5:13 PM

First off, I apologise for some of my old scraps occasionally appearing in your inboxes; I've been editing my entire gallery here and I've still not completely gotten used to the Edit Deviation interface they're beta testing currently. :P

Which leads into the subject of this journal; my scraps. Previously I've used my scraps as a dumping ground for old images from my gallery I no longer deemed worthy of inclusion there, but I'm changing that now. From now on I shall be using my scraps as a place to dump interesting little artistic tid-bits, experiments, works in progress, preliminary sketches, colour roughs, and so on and so forth....

In a nutshell; if you're at all interested in my art then my scraps have become a whole lot more interesting, and are going to get even moreso as I submit more to them (so you might want to watch them ;)). I won't be submitting this stuff to my main gallery, as I desire to keep that for finished work (mostly).

~ ~ ~

The feature theme this time will be geometric architectural photography, since that was suggested twice in the last journal.

Twitter & The Queen

Journal Entry: Tue Sep 27, 2011, 4:50 AM

Are any of you like me; painfully lame enough to have a Twitter account? If so do share, and you might even want to follow me at [link] Sometimes I actually post interesting things, and I'm sure you do too! :la:

Also, your Twitter experience can be massively enhanced by using the RockMelt browser, since you'll have a Twitter live feed integrated into the browser itself, so you can stay up to date without having to go check the site all the time. ;)

Following on from my last journal, I'm featuring ~Queen-of-Spiders this time round. She has a small but perfectly-formed gallery self-portraits; excellently painted, highly interesting, and by turns vibrant, disturbing, and emotive. Go check her out! :happybounce:

Suggest Features and Stuff

Journal Entry: Fri Sep 16, 2011, 5:17 AM

My page is too uneven, so I wanted to make a short journal to even it out. :iconforgivemeplz:

As you may have noticed, I like to do features of various sorts in my journals. I thought it'd be interesting to ask if you guys wanted to suggest feature themes and deviants for the next journal (and the next, and the next, and so on...). So, you want to suggest some themes/people in to me in this journal? ;)

To encourage you to comment and suggest I'm going to feature ponies until someone says something different. :grump:

Identity Crisis & Boobs

Journal Entry: Tue Aug 16, 2011, 6:00 PM

As you may or may not know, I've spent the last three years studying illustration at college, and a few weeks ago I graduated. Yes, I'm no longer a student, but technically a jobbing professional artist. Or a professional bum. :B

The point is, I thought to myself the other day, is that I need to start creating for myself a more professional web presence, and what better place to start this than the place I've already got the strongest presence; deviantArt.

Now, it has come to my attention that companies are not above hacking into, or simply checking up on, prospective employee's Facebook and other social networking profiles, in order to see what kind of person they are. As many of you probably know my deviantArt presence is far from professional, since I spend a lot of time here in the forums being a colossal dick to everyone. This is not very professional at all. :B

My gallery here is also rather sprawling and un-concise, full of scrappy stuff, and generally not the kind of thing to show any potential employer.

So I've been considering what to do about this, and came up with several options;
   1. I could make another account as a professional profile, where I act all businesslike. This profile would have no connection to this one. I would then get rid of most of the art on this one and continue to use it as normal.
   2. I could clean this account up and use it as a professional account, then make another account to forum with. Again, this foruming account would be completely unconnected with this one.
   3. I could do both of the above and have three accounts. I thought this because I didn't consider 'CrimsonMagpie' to be a very professional moniker, and wanted something slicker for my portfolio profile.

There are problems with these options though.... I've been foruming for a long time, and my post-count is quite impressive. Call me sad, but I don't want to have to start from square one again. I also have a lot of art here, including three DDs, which would disappear if I were to get rid of the art from here. I'm also scatty, and would invariably neglect one or more of these new accounts, or this one....

But then I drank some whisky, and found clarity; employers aren't likely to come to dA looking for artists. It's more a place where professionals can interact with fans more personally than otherwise, and if I'm going to direct any potential employers to a showcase of my work, then it won't be here. So, I needn't worry too much about being all neat and professional here.

And so to my solution. I have decided to keep this account as my one and only deviantArt account, but I shall be making some changes. I'm no longer going to be as much of a cunt in the forums, and instead want to be a more positive member of the dA community. I shall also be altering my identity on here slightly, and streamlining my gallery. But by and large this will remain a place where I can kick back, post stuff that might not be appropriate elsewhere, relax, and socialise.

I've also been mulling over how to create a professional identity for myself without forcing anything or having to create new profiles everywhere. I'm not going into particulars now, but suffice to say that after several days of thought I've come up with an idea that I'm happy with, and  shall be starting to implement soon.

I know I could have imparted the necessary information in there more concisely, but I wanted to vent. If you read it all then you deserve a cookie, and the feature below is for you. If you didn't read it then you're a big meanie and the tooth fairy will come to pull your teeth out with bolt cutters. :stare:

Artflakes.com Scam? Legit? D:

Journal Entry: Mon Aug 15, 2011, 6:21 PM

I've recently had an email from one Daniel Brueckner (head of marketing) asking if I'd be interested in submitting work to Artflakes, for a 'print on demand cooperation' as he'd seen my dA portfolio.

Have any of you guys received this email? Do you know for certain if it's a legitimate company or a ripoff merchant? I've searched for them but gotten mixed results, so it's be great if any of you guys had any firsthand experience.

The wording of the email is slightly strange, but he is supposedly German, and due to the rather shocking standards of English prevalent today one can find it hard to distinguish between poorly written spam and legitimately professional work offers.

And now, to offset all that seriousness, let's have a feature of some humorous and quirky! :eager:

2→Each tagged person must post 10 things about themselves on their journal.

4→Go to their pages and tell them you tagged them. (BULL FRICKIN' HORSE SHIT >:U)
5→No tag backs.

TWO:
I own a lot of books.  Apparently this is unusual. I find the fact that this is unusual unusual.

THREE:

FOUR:
My watch is a 1971 vintage bespoke Swiss gold plated Eterna thing, worth more than your car. :aww:

My room is apparently the most tidy student room ever (I live in a student house). :B

I routinely carry enough drugs to kill a dozen people. No kidding.

EIGHT:
I eat like a famished horse and still have a stomach like a washboard, because I'm cool like that.

NINE:
Logic and reason pwn emotion and stuff.

TEN:
I've never had sex with a cow. Honest. :B

Charity for Tornado Victims +Feature

Journal Entry: Thu Jul 14, 2011, 2:37 PM

I said to ~WarthogDemon that I'd try to help out promoting the Speedgamers Charity for Tornado Victims, so they can raise as much money as possible. :)

(Copypasta from ~WarthogDemon's journal)
For those of you who have no clue who I'm talking about, The Speed Gamers are a group of people who raise money by playing video games 24/7 for days (in this case from July 8th to July 15th) at a time. They do this via a live stream 24/7 nonstop where viewers can watch and donate money to ChipIn via credit card. Last year they were able to raise over $50,000 dollars for autism research. and this year they're hoping to raise money for Direct Relief International. The money sent to them will go directly to the support of tornado victims.

Unfortunately I'm unable to donate due to being a poor recently graduated student turned bum, but I hope some of you lucky people with jobs and/or money are interested! :iconsadpinkiepieplz:

London Town

Journal Entry: Sat Jul 2, 2011, 6:58 PM

I'm going to ol' London Town to attend the New Designers exhibition as an exhibitor, because they know I'll make it at least 20% cooler. This means I'll be absent from dA until Saturday, I hope you can all survive without me for all that time! :noes:

~ThereAreNoTurkeys; I'll do your tag when I get back. :B

I have strawberry laces to eat on the train journey. :iconspikehappiestplz:

30+ Songs

Journal Entry: Sun Jun 5, 2011, 5:47 PM

First a small life update.

I've now officially finished my entire degree course; I handed in my final major project on Friday. The last few weeks were frantic and I managed to turn myself into a tense ball of stress held together with coffee. For all that effort I'm not proud, as my output was at times severely affected by apathy. I learned a lot though, and feel better set up for the rest of my life now.

However, the end of my course does not mean the end of work, nuuuu... It's the college Summer Show in a fortnight, and the New Designers show in London a fortnight after that, so if anything I'll be working just as hard in the next month as the previous. I'm actually looking forward to it though, as I currently feel no stress. :B

Due to my work situation over the last few weeks my inbox currently numbers about 10,000 messages, mostly deviations, so bear with me; I will look at everything that catches my eye. c:

Competition!

Journal Entry: Tue Apr 5, 2011, 4:22 AM

~Tinoculars and ^kingmancheng have set up a contest, and as a judge it's only right that I make a journal about it. C:

So, the idea is to create an adversitement for a plain white box. It's up to you to decide what it's purpose is and how to sell it; you could advertise it as a building material, storage device, weapon... anything! This is a competition to challenge your ability to make people buy stuff, a skill that is cornerstone to our capitalist society, so don't miss out on this opportunity to hone such a vital life skill! ;D

Details of the competition can be found here :iconthefonzplz: [link]

Friend in need

Journal Entry: Fri Mar 18, 2011, 6:13 PM

So ~Tinoculars has entered a competition on Facebook to win a graphics tablet. The reason she's entered is that she doesn't have a tablet which isn't an ideal situation for an art student trying to do well in college and she doesn't have the money to buy one. . . :( The entry with the most comments wins, so all I'm asking is for you to leave a nice little comment on her piece, to give her a little more chance of winning. c:

Here is the link to her image [link] (you'll need to like the competition page to be able to leave your comment) so please help her out, jha? :iconimsorryplz:

Deadline is March 15th, so go go go! :eager:

In other news, I have 32 hours to turn 10,000 words worth of rambling notes into a finished dissertation, it's gonna kill me, YEY! :dummy:

EDIT: apparently she still has until this Sunday, so go comment, GOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOGO!!! :iconhypnolaplz:

So I just recently spent £70 on a bottle of absinthe from France, and a spoon & glass to drink it with. I cannot wait for it all to arrive in the post! :eager:

My provisional driving license arrived over Christmas, and since my lack of ID meant that'd I'd purchased almost no alcohol in the past three months, I thought I'd use the all the money I didn't spend in that time to treat myself to something special. I have stupidly expensive tastes! :crying:

Journal Entry: Mon Dec 6, 2010, 6:05 PM

I'm going through, a period of rather intense artistic self-doubt at the moment. . . I'm seeing so much amazing art everywhere and keep wishing I was as good. There's a strong urge to experiment with myriad different styles and mediums; "what if I try this? Will it make me better?", "will changing this about my technique improve my art?", etc. . . On top of this I have a ridiculous amount of ideas and inspiration at the moment, which is hard because I have to focus on college work, and many of these ideas are unsuitable for college or commercial work for varying reasons. So yea, I'm buzzing pretty hard at the moment and it feels weird. . .

I'd also be grateful for your feedback on an issue I've been thinking about. Is my art somewhat lacking in concept and narrative? I know that a lot of my images are simply visualisations of things, often with little story or meaning behind them, and even when they are from some narrative (like my mooncalf stuff) they're usually just isolated illustrations of specific things within said narrative, shorn of interaction within the story itself. Just pictures to show what something looks like, if you will. . .

To that end, I'm going to try hard to incorporate more interesting concepts into my work, as well as trying my hardest to really push myself technically. Hopefully this will result in a dramatic increase in the quality of my art. Or at worst, a small improvement.

Also recently I've gotten a strong urge to really do something with my mooncalves, instead of just random torture-porn and shit. Despite the pressures of college work I'd like to build them a proper, considered universe to inhabit and storyline in which to do things. This should mean things like history, physiology, anatomical references, other alien races inhabiting the same universe, character concepts, hardware designs, story illustrations and all that jazz. . . This will almost certainly happen at a slow rate, but after I graduate I'd like to spend perhaps a few months really going for it before I have to jump into the big scary world of getting a job (hopefully in the commercial art industry of course).

I don't think I've ever written a cathartic journal before, feels weird, but this is what happens when it's 02:00 and I've no whiskey. :iconstaresplz:
