So aaaages ago I posted a thread in Thumbshare to find themed images to feature. My intent was to post feature journals every few weeks or so, but unfortunately life has simply been filled with too many other things that took priority. Anyway, at the very least, here's the results of my thread. I do hope you enjoy the feature, and don't hesitate to comment and fave your appreciation on the artists' pages! :happybounce:

You might have noticed that I'm updating a lot of my old artworks. A lot of these updated artworks are very different from my current stuff, so hopefully my newer watchers will at least find these updates interesting. :p

When I was younger I was a traditional purist, and refused even to accept the principle that significant digital editing is necessary to get a traditional painting to look true-to-life on screen, preferring instead to upload minimally altered scans. Wot a wanker. :noes:

Thankfully I've grown up now, and replacing many of the image files in my gallery with properly edited versions that look a lot more like the real physical artworks. Enjoy! Or not. :dummy:

Eeey, how's y'all? :iconbritishplz:

As any of you who're still active might've noticed, I've been pretty much inactive here - and on most social media - for the past year. However, I'm now starting to push myself back into the online social-sphere. :dummy:

Once I've built up a little more momentum again on dA I'm planning on setting up an Instagram account, but I don't know enough cool artists there... I need more people to follow! Which is why I'm writing this journal; I'm compiling a list of awesome people to follow when I make my own account, so I need you to post links to both your Instagram accounts and/or give me suggestions of awesome artists to follow. I prefer pen & ink artists and comic artists, but love all kinds of art, so don't be shy! :meow:

Let's see what you've got! :iconrussiandrinkingplz:

A couple of years ago, when I was just starting out as an illustrator I was commissioned to draw most of the art for an independent comic called The Foundation. It was one of the first projects I ever did, and although finished a long while ago is now after some delays finally seeing the light of day. :dummy:

Written by Thomas Muzzel it's a haunted house story with a twist; a cursed building that causes misery to any who stray into its bounds. The plot switched between two timelines, each illustrated by a different artist. Mine involves a 1930's chain gang who get into all sorts of bother. I won't say any more as I don't want to spoil the story, but might post a few more unlettered pages in my gallery. :meow:

It's currently being serially published on Thomas Muzzel's site, so scoot on over and have a read at

Ey all, it's been a while since my last journal entry, so I thought a little update was in order. :p

I'm currently without a keyboard, it having broken, so am having to make do with the on-screen thing, clicking letters with the cursor. It's a right bugger to do, so I'm trying to minimise the amount of typing I do at the mo'. If I've appeared a little absent recently that's why. :nuu:

I recently Lazarus-ed my Facebook art page, so do follow me there if you want. I often use it for posting works-in-progress that I don't show here, often for commercial things I won't be able to post here for a long time.

I'm also on ArtStation, and if any've you have profiles there a follow'd be much appreciated. :dummy:

ArtStation >>> www.artstation.com/artist/robc…

Lastly, I've decided to make virtually everything in my gallery for sale, so on the off-chance you want some original art drop me a line about it. :)

That's all for now, stay frosty! :iconbritishplz:

It's probably obvious to anyone who's watched me for a while that I don't write journals very often. However, this is something I'm intending to rectify, and to start with I thought I'd show you all some of the kind of stuff I've been up to. :meow:

Early last year I was hired to create a series of cartoons to illustrate a video being made for the German law firm Anwaltskanzlei Weiß & Partner, informing people of their services advising and defending people accused of online piracy.

www.ratgeberrecht.eu/

www.ratgeberrecht.eu/abmahnung…

All the images you see in the video were made by Yours Truly. A departure from my usual style, but nonetheless and enjoyable exercise in adapting to the needs of a client. I feel being able to change stylistic gears like that is a useful - possibly crucial - skill for any aspiring illustrator.

:happybounce: A few of my favourite of the cartoons are in my gallery for closer enjoyment. :happybounce:

Some of the more astute amongst you might have noticed that I'm not terribly active around dA anymore.... This is because I've gone and gotten myself a job, tally-ho! But not just any job; I'm now officially a commercial artist, drawing stuff for money and all that! :la:

Unfortunately this means I'm unable to post the art I create until after the projects I work on have been published. I'm quite active here, but for now I use dA mostly as a place to just chill during downtime. =p

Now, for the meat of this journal! One of the projects I'm working on at present is a little comic called Arthur Shilling. It's a steampunk series about a gentleman who's a plumber by day, paranormal investigator by night! As you may have guessed, I'm drawing the interior art for the first issue (and hopefully future ones!), which'll have a print run of 500. We're trying to raise the modest funding for this issue via Kickstarter, so I'm calling upon my little following of watchers here to throw a little Arthur Shilling's way and help us make this thing a reality! We've got some nice little goodies for people who pledge certain amounts, and a few select generous pledgers will get an original page of artwork by yours truly! :dummy:

So go on, even a shilling is more than welcome! Here's the Kickstarter page

Even if you're a little skint, just liking the page and spreading the word about Arthur would be great!

On a very much related note, as part of the campaign, the writers of Arthur Shilling filmed me drawing the titular character for the first time. Follow the link and you can see Mr. Magpie babbling about arty things whilst tackling Arthur for the very first time! :la:

New Journal is New

Mon Oct 15, 2012, 3:12 PM
So that old journal was just too old, so let's replace it with something vaguely unsatisfying, like entering a loose person. :meow:

What is your favorite ice cream flavour?
Honeycomb, or hideously artificial bubblegum flavour. :la:

What do you enjoy doing the most?
I don't really know... many enjoyable things are unsatisfying, and vice versa. Sex and drawing are good. :B

If you could read somebody's mind, would you go and do it? Even if you were invading their privacy big time?
Yes, because it would make life a lot easier.

If you could instantly become a star, what would you do? What's your reaction to that?
I'd light up the world, be super hot, and give people cancer. :la:

What do you do to fall asleep? (Count sheep?)
A large mug of coffee and lying in bed usually does the trick. Also spooning. :meow:

What would you change about the world? One thing only. Why is this most significant?
I'd make water violent lime green. If you want a reason, think about what the world would be like with this wonderful change.

What color represents your life this moment?
Black & white. Because I'm cool like that. :toocool:

Did you ever run away when you were little?  If so, why?
Nope. :meow:

1 - Insect lover or insect loather?
2 - Outdoor person or indoor person?
3 - You can outlaw ONE meme, which do you choose?
4 - Fantasy or sci-fi?
5 - Three words you hate?

TAGTAGTAG

Journal Entry: Tue Jan 3, 2012, 6:05 PM

Good evening, my little droogs, I trust you've all recovered from your hangovers enough for me to wish you positive tidings for the new year. Yes, I know the world is going to blow up or something later on, but lets enjoy it whilst it lasts, no? :meow:

~ ~ ~

1. For each of the 20 first people answering this journal, I will put their avatar and the three deviations I like most from their gallery on the list!

2. If you answer, you have to DO THE SAME in your journal, putting the tagger on the first place. The idea of this is not to get a free feature, it is to spread art around for everyone!

Interesting Scraps and Geometry

Journal Entry: Sat Oct 1, 2011, 5:13 PM

First off, I apologise for some of my old scraps occasionally appearing in your inboxes; I've been editing my entire gallery here and I've still not completely gotten used to the Edit Deviation interface they're beta testing currently. :P

Which leads into the subject of this journal; my scraps. Previously I've used my scraps as a dumping ground for old images from my gallery I no longer deemed worthy of inclusion there, but I'm changing that now. From now on I shall be using my scraps as a place to dump interesting little artistic tid-bits, experiments, works in progress, preliminary sketches, colour roughs, and so on and so forth....

In a nutshell; if you're at all interested in my art then my scraps have become a whole lot more interesting, and are going to get even moreso as I submit more to them (so you might want to watch them ;)). I won't be submitting this stuff to my main gallery, as I desire to keep that for finished work (mostly).

~ ~ ~

The feature theme this time will be geometric architectural photography, since that was suggested twice in the last journal.

Twitter and The Queen

Journal Entry: Tue Sep 27, 2011, 4:50 AM

Are any of you like me; painfully lame enough to have a Twitter account? If so do share, and you might even want to follow me at twitter.com/#!/CrimsonMagpie Sometimes I actually post interesting things, and I'm sure you do too! :la:

Also, your Twitter experience can be massively enhanced by using the RockMelt browser, since you'll have a Twitter live feed integrated into the browser itself, so you can stay up to date without having to go check the site all the time. ;)

Following on from my last journal, I'm featuring Queen-of-Spiders this time round. She has a small but perfectly-formed gallery self-portraits; excellently painted, highly interesting, and by turns vibrant, disturbing, and emotive. Go check her out! :happybounce:

Suggest Features and Stuff

Journal Entry: Fri Sep 16, 2011, 5:17 AM

My page is too uneven, so I wanted to make a short journal to even it out. :iconforgivemeplz:

As you may have noticed, I like to do features of various sorts in my journals. I thought it'd be interesting to ask if you guys wanted to suggest feature themes and deviants for the next journal (and the next, and the next, and so on...). So, you want to suggest some themes/people in to me in this journal? ;)

To encourage you to comment and suggest I'm going to feature ponies until someone says something different. :grump:

Identity Crisis and Boobs

Journal Entry: Tue Aug 16, 2011, 6:00 PM

As you may or may not know, I've spent the last three years studying illustration at college, and a few weeks ago I graduated. Yes, I'm no longer a student, but technically a jobbing professional artist. Or a professional bum. :B

The point is, I thought to myself the other day, is that I need to start creating for myself a more professional web presence, and what better place to start this than the place I've already got the strongest presence; deviantArt.

Now, it has come to my attention that companies are not above hacking into, or simply checking up on, prospective employee's Facebook and other social networking profiles, in order to see what kind of person they are. As many of you probably know my deviantArt presence is far from professional, since I spend a lot of time here in the forums being a colossal dick to everyone. This is not very professional at all. :B

My gallery here is also rather sprawling and un-concise, full of scrappy stuff, and generally not the kind of thing to show any potential employer.

So I've been considering what to do about this, and came up with several options;
   1. I could make another account as a professional profile, where I act all businesslike. This profile would have no connection to this one. I would then get rid of most of the art on this one and continue to use it as normal.
   2. I could clean this account up and use it as a professional account, then make another account to forum with. Again, this foruming account would be completely unconnected with this one.
   3. I could do both of the above and have three accounts. I thought this because I didn't consider 'CrimsonMagpie' to be a very professional moniker, and wanted something slicker for my portfolio profile.

There are problems with these options though.... I've been foruming for a long time, and my post-count is quite impressive. Call me sad, but I don't want to have to start from square one again. I also have a lot of art here, including three DDs, which would disappear if I were to get rid of the art from here. I'm also scatty, and would invariably neglect one or more of these new accounts, or this one....

But then I drank some whisky, and found clarity; employers aren't likely to come to dA looking for artists. It's more a place where professionals can interact with fans more personally than otherwise, and if I'm going to direct any potential employers to a showcase of my work, then it won't be here. So, I needn't worry too much about being all neat and professional here.

And so to my solution. I have decided to keep this account as my one and only deviantArt account, but I shall be making some changes. I'm no longer going to be as much of a cunt in the forums, and instead want to be a more positive member of the dA community. I shall also be altering my identity on here slightly, and streamlining my gallery. But by and large this will remain a place where I can kick back, post stuff that might not be appropriate elsewhere, relax, and socialise.

I've also been mulling over how to create a professional identity for myself without forcing anything or having to create new profiles everywhere. I'm not going into particulars now, but suffice to say that after several days of thought I've come up with an idea that I'm happy with, and  shall be starting to implement soon.

I know I could have imparted the necessary information in there more concisely, but I wanted to vent. If you read it all then you deserve a cookie, and the feature below is for you. If you didn't read it then you're a big meanie and the tooth fairy will come to pull your teeth out with bolt cutters. :stare:

Artflakes.com Scam? Legit? D:

Journal Entry: Mon Aug 15, 2011, 6:21 PM

I've recently had an email from one Daniel Brueckner (head of marketing) asking if I'd be interested in submitting work to Artflakes, for a 'print on demand cooperation' as he'd seen my dA portfolio.

Have any of you guys received this email? Do you know for certain if it's a legitimate company or a ripoff merchant? I've searched for them but gotten mixed results, so it's be great if any of you guys had any firsthand experience.

The wording of the email is slightly strange, but he is supposedly German, and due to the rather shocking standards of English prevalent today one can find it hard to distinguish between poorly written spam and legitimately professional work offers.

And now, to offset all that seriousness, let's have a feature of some humorous and quirky! :eager:

Il Duce

Journal Entry: Wed Jul 20, 2011, 5:44 PM

I have been tagged, twice. ThereAreNoTurkeys tagged me just before I went to London, and Tinoculars tagged me just the other day, because she's mean. :B

ThereAreNoTurkeys' tag:
1→You must post these rules.
2→Each tagged person must post 10 things about themselves on their journal.
3→You have to choose and tag 10 people and post their icons on the same journal.
4→Go to their pages and tell them you tagged them. (BULL FRICKIN' HORSE SHIT >:U)
5→No tag backs.
6→No crap in the tagging section about "you are tagged if you read this." You legitimately have to tag ten people.

ONE:
I can't stand beer, lager, or wine... I'm a cider and spirits person.

TWO:
I own a lot of books.  Apparently this is unusual. I find the fact that this is unusual unusual.

THREE:
I used to draw/paint a lot of fairies, inspired by Brian Froud. I plan on taking this up again soon, because monies.

FOUR:
My watch is a 1971 vintage bespoke Swiss gold plated Eterna thing, worth more than your car. :aww:

FIVE:
I'm passionate and proud of the English language, and it saddens me to see people raping it through laziness and ignorance.

SIX:
My room is apparently the most tidy student room ever (I live in a student house). :B

SEVEN:
I routinely carry enough drugs to kill a dozen people. No kidding.

EIGHT:
I eat like a famished horse and still have a stomach like a washboard, because I'm cool like that.

NINE:
Logic and reason pwn emotion and stuff.

TEN:
I've never had sex with a cow. Honest. :B

I tag:
